100% Blaufrankisch from Burgenland, Austria.
Biodynamic, hand harvested, vegan and naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts.
The Weninger family has been making wine since 1828. Today the family is hailed as the biodynamic pioneers of the Burgenland region. The family was allowed to purchase 20 diverse plots in Hungary’s Sopron region in addition to their properties in Austria so they’re able to create many different expressions of Blaufrankisch. The Sopron region is regarded as the birthplace of Blaufrankisch or Kekfrankos as it is known in Hungary.
Despite their vineyard’s vast array of terroir and micro climates their Blaufrankisch has consistent sour cherry and dark berry flavors, with hints of black olives, spicy tannins and racy acidity.
Blaufrankisch comes from the German word “Blau” meaning blue referring to the bluish color of the grapes. The grape is a parent grape to Zweigelt and Gamay! There’s a lot of genetic networking going on in Austria!
