In 1964 Paul Draper turned the California wine industry on to the idea of appreciating the single vineyard wine concept. He brazenly chose the underdog Zinfandel grape as his primary vehicle of expression and the rest is history.
Paul Draper’s (and Ridge’s)philosophy hasn’t changed in 60 years: he still takes a pre- industrial approach to the vineyards and grows the most intensely flavorful grapes possible.
This stunning example of what Ridge is about is made primarily from Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, Carignane, and Mataro from legendary vineyards at Lytton Estate, Alexander Valley, and Russian River.
The blend is svelte, brambly, with vibrant raspberry and black cherry flavors. Who knew that Zinfandel could be robust, refined, and graceful all at once!
Many years ago when my wine curiosity was developing, I got to try a selection of Paul Draper’s wines. It was an epiphany for me and jettisoned me into a greater appreciation for wine and the people who create it!
